Title: Preliminary assessment of neutron radiography for detecting inhomogeneities in ceramics. Technical report

As a result of the availability of small neutron sources, neutron radiography is becoming a more accessible tool for materials evaluation. Prior to the development of these sources, nuclear reactors were needed for neutron radiography. The attenuation coefficients of the elements for neutrons are very different from their X-ray attenuation coefficients; for example, neutrons interact strongly with hydrogen atoms. As a result, one can readily detect the spatial distribution of hydrated species and polymers within a ceramic body. Potential applications for neutron radiography are found in evaluating drying and binder-removal processes from ceramic compacts. This paper illustrates the use of neutron radiography for detecting voids, polymer inclusions, and binder distributions in SiC, Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} and A{sub 12}O{sub 3} based materials.
