The anisotropy of the normal state resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and the superconducting upper and lower critical fields in the ab plane of untwinned crystals of YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub x} is reviewed. While anisotropy is found in the normal state, none is found for the superconducting state. This behavior strongly supports the conclusion that the chains do not participate in the superconductivity, but raises questions about the effect of proximity. 24 refs., 7 figs.
