Measurements of the superconducting and normal-state magnetic-susceptibility {chi} anisotropies of high-purity grain-aligned powder samples of YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7} are reported. Excellent alignment was achieved using a noncontaminating {ital in} {ital situ} technique. We find a strong temperature-dependent anisotropy {Delta}{chi}=={chi}{sub {ital c}}{minus}{chi}{sub ab} that decreases from positive values for {ital T}{gt}{ital T}{sub {ital c}} to negative values for {ital T}{lt}{ital T}{sub {ital c}}, consistent with reported torque-magnetometer measurements on single crystals. Estimates of the normal-state spin contributions to {chi} are obtained and compared with previous results.
