Mediterranean geology is complex, reserves are modest
Structurally complex tertiary mountain chains border the Mediterranean coast. Petroleum prospects are chiefly in platform areas between mountain ranges and in Pliocene to Quaternary troughs developed after main mountain-building episodes. So far, oil production is limited to Spain, but heavy oil high in sulfur has been found in the northern Aegean Sea, in the Adriatic Sea, and off the coast of Sicily. There are important gas fields in the northern Adriatic Sea and off the tip of southern peninsular Italy. Wildcat programs are active off eastern Spain and southwest of Sicily. Companies have applied for exploration rights in very deep waters of the western Mediterranean, where there is thick Miocene salt and hundreds of salt domes and pillows.
