The pK/sub a/ of pyraziniumpentacyanoruthenate(II), (Cn)/sub 5/Ru(pzH)/sup 2 -/

The synthesis and characterization of (CN)/sub 5/Ru(pz)/sup 3 -/ (pz = pyrazine) and its N-methylated derivative, (CN)/sub 5/Ru(pzCH/sub 3/)/sup 2 -/, are described. The proton NMR spectra of pz or pzCH/sub 3//sup +/ coordinated to (NH/sub 3/)/sub 5/Ru/sup 2 +/, (CN)/sub 5/Ru/sup 3 -/, (CN)/sub 5/Fe/sup 3 -/, and (CN)/sub 5/Co/sup 2 -/ are discussed. The effective pK/sub a/'s of (CN)/sub 5/Ru(pzH)/sup 2 -/ and (CN)/sub 5/Fe(pzH)/sup 2 -/ have been measured by spectrophotometric titration as 0.4 +/- 0.1 and 0.065 +/- 0.06 in contrast with 2.85 +/- 0.1 for (NH/sub 3/)/sub 5/Ru(pzH)/sup 3 +/. The influence of CN/sup -/ on ..pi.. back-bonding as compared to that of NH/sub 3/ is discussed for complexes of the Fe(II), Ru(II), and Os(II) triad.
