Proper fluids reduce formation damage

Factors relating to reduced productivity have long been recognized. Relatively recent factors of higher oil and gas prices and shortages have caused a concentrated effort to optimize production to near true potential. One reason for low productivity is formation damage. This damage, often called skin, results from fluid contact with reservoir rocks in the process of drilling, completion or workover. This is a major problem, causing significant loss of production from proven oil and natural gas reservoirs. Formation damage is induced by invasion and plugging by fine particles, formation clay swelling, incompatible fluids, formation particles dislodging and movement, change in wettability and emulsion or water blocks. A suggested procedure for drilling-in/completion with a nondamaging fluid is given. 15 references.
