All aspects of wood stove safety are reviewed. Choosing the right stove is discussed from the safety point of view to avoid overheated fireboxes or underfired heaters. Creosote formation is described as well as means to reduce its formation. Instructions are given for safe installation of wood stoves wih emphasis on safety clearances and heat shielding materials. Connection of the stovepipe and the safe procedure for chimney connection are discussed as well as chimney inspection and periodic cleanup. Types of firewood to be used and manner of burning are shown to be important safety considerations. Other maintenance procedures (stove, stovepipe) are described and, in the event of a fire, recommended procedures are given. It is concluded that most fires are caused by improper installation or lack of maintenance. (MJJ)
