It is known that metallic lanthanides react readily with alkyl and aryl halides and form compounds similar to Grignard's reagents (RLnX). The authors found that organotin iodides react with metallic lanthanides in a similar manner. The compound Bu/sub 3/SnI reacts with ytterbium in THF solution at temperatures ranging from -50 to +20/sup 0/C, giving tributylstannylytterbium iodide Bu/sub 3/SNYbI, in 15-20% yield. The other products of the reaction are the distannane Bu/sub 3/SnSnBu/sub 3/ and YbI/sub 2/ which appear to form upon reaction between the original tributylin iodide and Bu/sub 3/SnYbI. Europium reacts with Bu/sub 3/SnI analogously.
