The oxidation of the title compound with PbO/sub 2/ in benzene or THF leads to the formation of the stable phenoxyl radical. The ESR spectrum of this radical consists of seven equidistant lines with relative intensities of 1:3:5:6:5:3:1. The hfs of the ESR spectrum of the radical arises from the interaction of the unpaired electron with two equivalent protons of the phenoxyl fragment (..cap alpha../sub H//sup m/ approx. = 1.1 Oe), with the hydrogen atom of the C/sup 1/H group (..cap alpha../sub H//sup C1H/ approx. = 2.2 Oe), and with nitrogen atom (..cap alpha../sub N/ approx. = 1.1 Oe), g 2.0043. The ESR spectrum of this radical remains substantially without change in the temperature range from -80 to +60/sup 0/C in toluene, hexane, and THF
