Federal and state coastal management programs

In response to the federal Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972, most coastal states adopted comprehensive coastal management programs. Alaska's program was designed to dovetail with the federal coastal management program (CMP). The report describes the coastal management legislation and programs of the federal government and the State of Alaska. Sections of the paper which are particularly pertinent to outer continental shelf oil and gas development and the effects of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act and the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act on coastal management are highlighted.
