A low cost ($300) batch solar water heater is described suitable for homes. Designed for non-freezing weather, savings of $50 to $300 are possible with a payback period of 2 to 4 years. The passive water heater has no moving parts. Detailed information and a blow-up diagram provides enough information for construction. Water storage is in a 30 gallon tank, which provides pre-heated water for the household water heater. It is not intended to be used in the winter in the frost belt. Single glazing rather than double glazing is recommended. It is concluded that the batch heater is a sensible answer to hot water for those on a limited budget. (MJJ)
