The use of solar or wind energy to provide electrical energy for both remote as well as grid-connected installations is becoming widespread. Because both solar and wind power can be intermittent and because some of these installations must be operable 24 hours a day, a battery backup system is essential. A battery for this type of application should have the following characteristics: withstand deep discharge cycling; have a long cycle life; operate with less than complete recharge; and require no maintenance. Gould has developed a unique totally maintenance-free sealed lead-acid battery for use with photovoltaic and other renewable energy source systems. The battery is capable of repetitive deep-cycle service and has good self-discharge and float charge characteristics which allow it to be used for standby energy storage applications. The battery can be charged at relatively high charging rates and a fully discharged battery can be recharged with an adequate overcharge in less than 10 hours with an internal pressure rise of 20-55kPa depending on the charge regime.
