Halogen induced modification of poly-2-vinylpyridine during lithium-halogen battery life

The ''molecular complexes'' formed between poly-2-vinylpyridine (P2VP) and excess bromine or iodine were shown to be complicated mixtures made up of products of modified and degraded P2VP, molecular halogen, and hydrogen halide. These conclusions were based on the following data: (a) hydrogen halide was formed, (b) the resultant polymers were different in properties from P2VP, (c) the intrinsic viscosities of the halogenated polymers were greatly reduced, and (d) the HPLC-GPC chromatograms indicated much lower average molecular weights. Other data pertinent to the molecular structure of ''degraded polymer'' were: (a) halogen to carbon bonds were present, (b) EPR spectra established the presence of unpaired electrons. On the basis of the data obtained, it is proposed that brominated poly-2-vinylpyridines are highly polydisperse mixtures of very low to moderately high molecular weight polyenes with pendant 2-pyridyl groups at every other carbon atom and bromine bonded to carbon randomly along the polymer backbone. Preliminary data indicate a similar result for iodinated poly-2-vinylpyridine. 4 refs.
