The goals and values of the university and church are seen to have played a contributing role in the energy crisis. Objective-analytical university disciplines, by focusing on how things work in nature rather than on why and by orienting their efforts toward controlling nature and man through technology, have become insensitive to ecology and the rhythms of nature. The university attitude is one of aggressive intellectual action with little emotion or understanding. Alternative funding methods, such as the voucher system, could be used to allow the teaching and learning process enough freedom to explore the areas of values and morals. The churches have an opportunity to develop a new awareness of nature by emphasizing man's stewardship role. Judeo-Christian theology has been goal-oriented and has emphasized man's work and accomplishments more than the meaning of his existence. Changes in man's perception of the earth and development of his concern for all things and all members of society should be a role of both these institutions. (DCK)
