The author discusses advantages to using calculated pseudo-sonic and pseudo-density logs, for synthetic seismogram generation, when the necessary measured sonic and density logs are not available. The most fundamental, and most critical, step in seismic interpretation is tying geologic information (i.e., log tops, faults, etc.) to the seismic data. Improper conversion from depth to time will produce erroneous results in the interpretation and mapping stages. Two tools discussed in this paper are the checkshot survey and synthetic seismograms generated from sonic logs (and density logs when they are available).
