Digital processing improves sonic log reliability
Sonic log data quality for seismic applications may be enhanced if long spacing and digital waveforms are used. High-quality sonic logs and vertical seismic profiles are complementary forms of seismic velocity control that offer additional insights into seismic interpretation problems when combined. When a vertical seismic profile is not available, the sonic log is the only practical means the exploration seismologist has of constructing the synthetic seismograms that are necessary to tie seismic and well log data. Considering the importance of velocity control in seismic exploration, and the comparative costs of seismic and sonic data, the extra effort and expense of ensuring sonic data quality by using long spacings and digital waveforms is more than justified. This is particularly true in areas with histories of poor sonic data quality, especially if a VSP is not run.
