Interfaces in alumina-SiC whisker composites

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5337107
The fracture toughness of alumina-SiC whisker composites is dependent on crack behavior at the whisker-matrix interface. With SiC whiskers having low surface oxygen contents, bonding at the whisker-matrix interface is minimized, considerable crack-whisker interaction is observed on the fracture surfaces, and composites with high fracture toughness are obtained. When composites are fabricated with SiC whiskers having high surface SiO/sub 2/ contents, increased bonding at the whicker-matrix interface appears to occur, crack growth is relatively uninhibited by the whiskers, and decreased fracture toughness is observed.
