Energy, economic growth, and regionalism in the West

Book ·
OSTI ID:5336683
The states of the Rocky Mountain West and the Northern Great Plains are the energy frontier of America. As the area's vast low sulfur strippable coal reserves and its oil shale, uranium, and geothermal potential are developed, the land and people of the region are subjected to the relentless forces of modernization. The consequences of this energy development, in particular the West's responses to the increased demand for its energy resources in the last decade, are the subject of this book. The activities of the Western Governors' Regional Energy Policy Office and its successor, the Western Governors' Policy Office, are analyzed to determine how regional political mechanisms emerge and what this regionalism means for future economic growth in the area. The clear and incisive statement on energy and economic policy in this book is essential reading for anyone concerned about managing growth in the West. The book will have particular importance to those involved in public policy, natural resource management, and environmental studies. Scholars in political science and history will similarly find it a valuable reference on contemporary American affairs.
