Atmospheric sulfates and mortality: the phantom connection

Journal Article · · Coal Min. Process.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5334001
EPA regulations concerning the full scrubbing of sulfur oxide emissions from coal-burning power plants are criticized. The regulations are based on the findings of EPA's Brookhaven and CHESS (Community Health and Environmental Surveillance System) reports and on Lave and Seskin's book Air Pollution and Human Health; data from these sources have been refuted by many researchers. Detailed criticisms of the EPA reports and the work of Lave and Seskin are presented. Although national levels of sulfur dioxide concentrations have steadily decreased in the past 20 yr, EPA is seeking still stricter SO2 emission controls. Economic conditions are provoking consumers to demand more substantial factual proof in the implementation of air pollution standards. (2 graphs, 28 references)
