Size distribution of the straight-chain structures in Type I and II kerogens

For a better insight of the size distribution of the straight-chain aliphatic structures and the manner in which these structures form part of the kerogen, mild stepwise oxidations of kerogens isolated from Green River shale (type I) and Monterey shale (type II) were conducted under identical experimental conditions. The distribution of normal monocarboxylic and {alpha},{omega}-dicarboxylic acids in each fraction was investigated, and their relevance to kerogen structure is described. Because {alpha},{omega}-dicarboxylic acids are mainly produced by diterminal oxidative cleavage of the insoluble matrix within the kerogen, the results indicate that, for the two kerogen samples studied, the cross-linked polymethylene bridges are in the range C{sub 10}-C{sub 15} with predominance of C{sub 12}. The results also show a higher degree of cross-linking in Green River kerogen compared to Monterey kerogen. The even to odd predominance for the distribution of n-monocarboxylic acids indicates a mild thermal history for both kerogens.
