Nature of cross-linked structures in kerogen

Recently, we have reported the results of the analysis of a complex mixture of degradation products obtained by mild stepwise oxidation (sodium dichromate/glacial acetic acid) of Green River and Monterey oil shale kerogens. In the present paper, an attempt has been made to clarify the contradictory conclusions about the size of the straight-chain aliphatic structures as well as the manner in which these structures form part of the kerogen matrix, (e.g., through cross linkage or terminal attachment). A semi-quantitative analysis of the products was thus performed using an INCOS-2300 GC-MS data processing system.
