In order to evaluate the role of the substituents and the pi-electrons of the benzene ring in the adsorption behavior of aromatic compounds on platinum in the current work, an investigation was made of the adsorption and electrochemical behavior on a polished platinum electrode of toluene, cyclohexene, and cyclohexane, and a comparative evaluation is given of the basic adsorption parameters of these materials and of benzene on a polished platinum electrode. The method used was rapid cathodic and anodic potentiodynamic pulses. It is shown that in the potential range 0.0-1.0 V there is a stable chemosorption of these materials and that their chemosorbed particles are hydrogenated at potentials below 0.2 V and are oxidized above 1.1 V. The adsorption characteristics conform to processes taking place on uniformly heterogeneous surfaces. It is shown that the nature of the chemosorbed particles of benzene, cyclohexene, and cyclohexane are similar. It was established that the adsorption behavior of aromatic compounds is determined by reaction between the pi-electrons of the benzene ring and surface atoms of the metal. The influence of substituents is secondary and mainly reduces to the appearance of additional steric hindrance.
