A number of studies have been devoted to the adsorption behavior of organic substances on platinum electrodes. The authors were interested in studying the adsorption of benzenesulfonic acid (BS) on platinum electrodes, both for disclosing the influence of pi-electronic interaction with the surface of the metal on the process of chemisorption and for revealing the role of the charge of the particle in the adsorption process. In this work, they investigated the principles of the adsorption of BS on platinized and smooth Pt electrodes in 1.0 and 0.1 N H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/. Potentiostatic and potentiodynamic methods were used, as well as the method of recording the charging curves and the shift of the potential of a Pt/Pt electrode with an open circuit. The results obtained suggest that the charge not directly incorporated into the aromatic ring has virtually no effect on the rate of the chemisorption process. The adsorption behavior of BS evidently is determined chiefly by the pi-electronic structure of the benzene ring system.
