The DPEP/ETIO and Porphyrin Maturity Parameter (PMP) have been used as maturity indicators of source rocks and oils. Investigation of the cause for the change in PMP with maturity using isothermal and nonisothermal pyrolysis techniques show that it is principally due to differences in the rates of decomposition of DPEP and ETIO porphyrins. At early stages of maturation, release of bound vanadyl ETIO porphyrins from the kerogen contributes to the change in PMP.
