A test was made to compare the costs and benefits of chip production within a forest with chipping at the mill. The test was conducted in two stands: a ponderosa pine site in Arizona from which sawtimber and pulpwood were harvested, and a spruce/fir site in Colorado where thinning and dead timber were chipped. All operations were included in the evaluation (felling, trimming, cross-cutting, hauling, etc.). Factors which affect chipping in the woods are discussed and include downtime (46%), chip size specification, loading rate and log dimensions.
