Quadrupole moment of the first excited state of /sup 136/Ba

The static electric quadrupole moment Q-italic(2/sub 1//sup +/) of the first excited state of /sup 136/Ba and the reduced transition probability B-italic(E-italic2;0/sub 1//sup +/..-->..2/sub 1//sup +/) have been measured using the reorientation effect in Coulomb excitation. It is found that Q-italic(2/sub 1//sup +/) = -0.19 +- 0.06 (+0.07 +- 0.07) e-italic b and B-italic(E-italic2;0/sub 1//sup +/..-->..2/sub 1//sup +/) = 0.419 +- 0.004 (0.417 +- 0.004) e-italic/sup 2/b/sup 2/ for constructive (destructive) interference involving the second 2/sup +/ state. These results agree well with one of the previous measurements of these quantities, but disagree markedly with another which is of similar precision to the present work.
