Projected operating characteristics of fluidized beds utilizing waste fuel products

Conference · · Proc. Am. Power Conf.; (United States)

This paper compares fluidized-bed combustors (FBCs) with conventional pulverized-coal-fired boilers and stokers with FGD systems. Favors FBC with regard to both capital and lifecycle costs. Concludes that fluidized-bed combustion is a viable alternative to meet steam production for the following reasons: SO/sub 2/ emissions are reduced without the use of an expensive conventional (wet or dry) FGD system; NO /SUB x/ emissions are expected to be well below NSPS standards; virtually any fuel can be burned in AFBC units; steam generation and heat transfer surface requirements will be significantly reduced; and fuel sizing requirements to facilitate proper bed fluidization are such that the need for conventional fuel processing would be reduced.
