Small-scale structure of intense longitudinal currents at high latitudes

This paper investigates the small-scale structures of the longitudinal currents observed in the auroral oval from magnetic measurements on the satellite Interkosmos-Bolgariya 1300. The characteristic transverse dimensions of the current are 2-8 km, and the intensities are 3 x 10/sup -5/-10/sup -4/ A/m/sup 2/. It is shown that some of the current structures correspond to a system of ''standing'' Alfvenwaves, evidently excited by instability of the magnetospheric convection. The dimension of the structure along the magnetic field and the magnitude of the anomalous resistance are evaluated.
