An investigation of a rotating biological contactor (RBC) for treatment of industrial wastewaters from an explosives formulation and blending plant with associated nitric acid and acetic anhydride production and acetic acid dehydration facilities, was made by analyzing the influent and effluent for pH, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, nitrate/nitrite, BOD, COD, and formaldehyde, and confirmed that the wastewaters from this facility could be degraded biologically in RBC's. BOD and COD reductions of >95% and 85%, respectively, were achieved consistently. A maximum BOD loading of 2.5 lb of soluble BOD/1000 sq ft of disk per day was achieved. The RBC was manufactured by George A. Hormel and Co. The wastewater treatment facility studied should produce water of sufficient quality to meet EPA guidelines.
