The tantalum subsulfide with the composition Ta/sub 3/S/sub 1.8/ has been prepared by a sealed silica tube method at 1300{sup 0}C. The crystal structure of newly synthesized Ta/sub 3/S/sub 1.8/ has been determined to be Ta/sub 3/S/sub 2/-type from X-ray powder and electron diffraction data. The compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group Abm2 (no.39), with unit-cell dimensions: a=7.472, b=17.218, and c=5.598 A. The observed density is D/sub obs/=11.2g.cm/sup -3/. The unit cell contains eight formula units of Ta/sub 3/S/sub 1.8/. Refinement of structure of Ta/sub 3/S/sub 1.8/ was performed by a Rietveld analysis of X-ray diffraction data, the positional parameters being determined. It is found that the structure of Ta/sub 3/S/sub 1.8/ is closely related to that of Ta/sub 2/S. This compound is metallic at room temperature.
