The authors discuss a new barium tantalum sulphide, Ba/sub 3/Ta/sub 2/S/sub 8/, prepared by sulphurization of a mixture of BaCO/sub 3/ and Ta/sub 2/O/sub 5/. The electron and powder X-ray diffraction patterns of the compound are indexed on the basis of a monoclinic cell with lattice constants. A structure model is proposed. The refinement based on the powder X-ray diffraction intensities is performed.
