Industry changed its attitude toward energy as post-embargo prices pushed energy into a major production cost component. The current reprieve in terms of lower prices and surplus supplies should be used by industry to reassess the progress made in using energy more efficiently. It requires a commitment on the part of top management and a constant monitoring of energy use at each facility. Johnson and Johnson's 8-point program and its Technical Advisory Council, which keeps abreast with new technology, analyzes paybacks, and conducts worldwide consultation and inter-company seminars, illustrates one company's approach.
