Slip casting is a traditional ceramic processing route for producing objects of complex shape, but has been largely ignored for the fabrication of ceramic matrix composites. A process involving ultrasonic mixing, pressurized slip-casting, vacuum pre-sintering and HIPing was studied to fabricate additive-free 6vol% SiC-whisker reinforced alumina of high density and complex shape for tensile testing. Good whisker dispersion was achieved, but the results showed that the whiskers tend to align in the axial direction, and to have slightly higher number density near the outer surface. No significant variation in whisker density was found in the axial direction.
