Silicon carbide whisker reinforced alumina

Conference · · Ceramic Engineering and Science Proceedings; (United States)
OSTI ID:7039430
Development of technology to commercially produce silicon carbide whiskers began in the early 1970s. Since then, researchers have shown that reinforcement with SiC whiskers markedly improves mechanical properties of alumina composites. By increasing fracture toughness from 2.7 MPa sq rt m for alumina to 6.6 MPa sq rt m for SiC whisker reinforced alumina, the composite is less sensitive to flaw size, resulting in improved resistance to crack growth. The improved fracture toughness, high temperature strength, and hardness has led to commercial applications such as cutting tool inserts, beverage-can forming tools, and wear resistant parts. 9 refs.
