EPA adds air incentives

Mary Nichols, EPA assistant administrator/air and radiation, says revisions to the agency`s program for assessing new industrial facilities and plant expansions proposed last week will reduce paperwork by 55% and save industry $13 million/year. Pollution prevention projects would be exempt from review, as would expansions that do not boost actual facility-wide pollution levels. Environmental benefits would accrue from a {open_quotes}meaningful incentive for industry to install innovative pollution control technology,{close_quotes} and from formal protections for National Parks and other wilderness areas, says Nichols. Congress will have 60 days to review the reforms after they are finalized.
