This dissertation reports the results of an experiment which measured inclusive e/sup +/e/sup -/ pair production in 17 GeV/c ..pi../sup -/p interactions. The experiment was conducted at the Multiparticle Spectrometer facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Electron identification was provided by two transition radiation detectors and lead-scintillator shower detectors. Pairs with X/sub F/ > .3 were visible for all P/sub perpendicular/ and their masses, and associated particles produced in the interaction were observable over nearly 4 ..pi.. solid angle. We have observed electron pairs with masses up to 1.5 GeV with little hadron contamination. A clear signal of rho/sup 0/ ..omega.. ..-->.. e/sup +/e/sup -/ is seen. Below the rho/sup 0//..omega.. mass region and excess of events over those expected from eta ..-->.. ..gamma..e/sup +/e/sup -/ and ..omega.. ..-->.. ..pi../sup 0/e/sup +/e/sup -/ sources is observed. This anomalous electron pair signal is sharply peaked at low X/sub F/.
