This dissertation reports a search for charm produced in 17 GeV/c PI-p interactions. The experiment was conducted at the Multiparticle Spectrometer facility of the Brookhaven National Laboratory. We looked for the following three final states: a ..lambda../sub c//sup +/ produced in association with a D/sup -/, D/sup 0/D/sup -/p and D + d/sup -/n. The D/sup -/ was required to decay semileptonically providing a single trigger electron. Electron identification was aided by two transition radiation detectors and two lead-acrylic shower detectors. Various charm decay hypotheses were tested (..lambda../sub c//sup +/ ..-->.. kappa/sup 0/p, ..lambda../sub c//sup +/ ..-->.. ..lambda.. PI/sup +/PI/sup +/PI/sup -/, ..lambda../sub c//sup +/ ..-->.. ..lambda.. PI/sup +/, D/sup +/ ..-->.. kappa/sup 0/PI/sup +/, and D/sup 0/ ..-->.. kappa/sup 0/PI/sup +/PI/sup -/) by assembling an effective mass from pattern recognized charged prongs. We find an upper limit (3 sigma) of 1.63 ub. for associated production, 1.49 ub. for the D/sup 0/D/sup -/p final state, and 1.58 ub. for the D/sup +/D/sup -/n final state.
