Representatives from the biotechnology industry as well as educators were among those testifying at a hearing before the Subcommittee on Technology and Competitiveness on the commercialization of biotechnology. The witnesses discussed ways to improve the ability to transfer research developments in the manufacturing stage. Comments were heard on the existing impediments of biotechnology and technology transfer, and what the federal government can do to help remove these impediments. The information gained will aid in the development of a comprehensive policy and will assist in the oversight of government agencies. There is the need for technology transfer, especially when a new technology is being developed. The purpose is to create new businesses in order that the United States can maintain its competitive edge in the global economy.
