The IAPX 286 is a new 16-bit microprocessor which has three key attributes which differentiate it from other 16-bit microprocessors. The 286 is a very high speed processor. It offers new functions never before supplied in a 16-bit microprocessor: memory management and protection functions built into the CPU for multiuser operation. The 286 is easy to use. The new functions and high performance simplify the task of writing operating systems and system software. For example, the 286 can respond to an interrupt and start a completely new task to process the interrupt with only one IAPX 286 instructions.
