Accelerated polymer gelation process for oil recovery applications

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5288058
A wellbore cementing process applied to a wellbore in fluid communication with a subterranean hydrocarbon-bearing formation below an earthen surface is described comprising: (a) mixing a simple mineral acid and a chromic carboxylate complex comprising a chromic species and a carboxylate species to form a crosslinking agent solution capable of crosslinking a water-soluble carboxylate-containing polymer, wherein the acid is present in the crosslinking agent solution in an amount sufficient to accelerate the crosslinking of the polymer relative to the crosslinking of the polymer with a crosslinking agent solution absent the acid; (b) mixing the polymer and the crosslinking agent solution containing the chromic carboxylate complex and simple mineral acid at the surface to form a gelation solution; (c) injecting the gelation solution into a volume in or adjacent the wellbore desired to be plugged via the wellbore; and (d) crosslinking the polymer to completion at an accelerated rate in the volume to form a cement gel which substantially plugs the volume.
