Wellbore cementing process using a polymer gel

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5239942
A primary cementing process for completion of a casing in a wellbore in fluid communication with a subterranean hydrocarbon-bearing formation below an earthen surface is described comprising: (a) admixing a gelation solution at the surface consisting essentially of a water-soluble carboxylate-containing polymer, a complex capable of crosslinking the polymer and formed of at least one chromic species and at least one acetate species, and a solvent for the polymer and the complex, (b) injecting the gelation solution into a volume behind the casing in the wellbore; and (c) crosslinking the gelation solution to substantial completion in the volume to form a non-flowing crosslinked polymer cement gel which substantially cements the casing to the face of the wellbore.
