Interacting quantum field theory in curved space-time

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:5283157
The status of interacting quantum field theory in curved space-time is surveyed and several new results are obtained. The use of the renormalization group in curved space-time is discussed and the equation governing the effective conformal coupling xi(kappa) is derived for phi/sup 4/ and phi/sup 3/. The 't Hooft pole equation for the conformal coupling constant counterterms is derived. Using dimensional regularization phi/sup 3/ is renormalized at the one-loop level in a six-dimensional conformally flat space-time. It is shown that if xi is treated as a renormalizable coupling constant then phi/sup 3/ in a six-dimensional conformally flat space-time is not renormalizable at the two-loop level due to the noncancellation of the state dependent infinities. The implications of this are discussed.
