A review of commercially available instruments for chemical analysis shows that all species of major interest in power plant water and steam can be determined with detection limits of 1 to 2 parts per billion. A Continuous On-Line Steam Analyzer is described as an example of a monitoring instrument package for parts per billion impurities. The abilities of the analyzer are demonstrated and typical results are presented. A total power plant survey of water and steam chemistry includes both continuous monitoring and the collection and analysis by ion chromatography of grab samples from various locations throughout the plant under a variety of operating conditions. Two total plant surveys are described. It is concluded from these surveys that reliable instrumentation exists for analysis in the 0 to 5 parts per billion range, that a chemically clean power plant water/steam system is possible, and that sodium is not a reliable indicator of anion levels.
