Ethanol production using Zymomonas mobilis immobilized in different carrageenan gels

Journal Article · · Dev. Ind. Microbiol.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5282903

Various types of common available carrageenans were screened and utilized to immobilize cells of Zymomonas mobilis ATCC 10988. The immobilized cells were used in an ordinary batch bioreactor system and a specially designed fixed-bed bioreactor to produce EtOH from glucose. Both surface-hardened and nonhardened carrageenan beads were tested containing immobilized cells ranging 50-100 g dry weight cell/L bead volume. The highest volumetric productivity of EtOH obtained was 101 g EtOH/L-h.
