New approaches to high pressure steam topping cogeneration systems. [Ljungstrom turbine]

Journal Article · · Am. Soc. Mech. Eng., (Pap.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5280023
Higher energy costs are the cause for greater interest in higher inlet conditions for industrial cogeneration systems. The paper explains the problems associated with higher inlet conditions for topping cogeneration systems. Solutions to the problems are presented aided by analysis techniques developed expressly for steam turbine topping cogeneration cycles. The paper explains the derivation of the analysis techniques and how these techniques contribute to solutions for problems which have concerned industrial cogeneration system designers when considering steam conditions heretofore limited to electric utility applications. The paper further examines the suitability of the Ljungstrom radial-flow steam turbine generator for topping cycles having higher steam pressures and temperatures. 3 refs.
