Evaluation of alternative system designs in a cogeneration plant

Conference · · Proc. Am. Power Conf.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5141743
This paper reviews the potential for generating electricity and process steam by cogeneration for the oil refining, fertilizer, pulp/paper, and cement industries. Finds that cogeneration offers a fuel utilization factor of 0.83; that a steam topping cycle cogeneration plant offers the opportunity to incorporate proven utility design concepts; that the higher the initial steam conditions at the inlet to the turbine, the greater is the power production; regenerative feedwater heating increases the power output by about 18%; that the utility concept is estimated to cost about 13% more per 1000 lbs. of process steam; and that the steam topping cycle cogeneration plant design is suitable when large quanitities of process steam and electricity are needed.
