Gas utilization platform improves crude oil production

Cooper-Bessemer and CB/Southern shipped the 1st of several gas utilization compression platforms late last year to facilitate oil lift and production and conserve natural gas at Venezuela's Lake Maracaibo. The 435-ton package, which was lifted to its platform support, started up, and checked out in 19 days, has been operating since without any shutdown related to equipment problems. The platform is used to scrub, compress, and cool the low-pressure field gas through a 3-stage compressor system to remove the condensate liquid, which is then piped off the platform for processing elsewhere. The gas utilization package is powered by a Cooper-Bessemer Coberra RT-125 gas turbine consisting of a Rolls-Royce Avon 76G gas generator and a Cooper-Bessemer RT-48 power turbine driving 2 Cooper-Bessemer centrifugal compressors in tandem through a speed-increasing gear. The packge is completely self-contained including accessory equipment such as inlet air plenums, inlet silencers, inlet filter, exhaust systems, and separate tube and seal oil systems - all monitored on a rigid structural steel base for fast, easy field erection. The turbine-compressor systems, rated 12,500 hp (15,400 hp peaking capacity) are equipped with a complete Entronic control system to provide maximum and safe gas throughput at all times.
