Wind energy progress at PG and E

Conference · · Proc., Intersoc. Energy Convers. Eng. Conf.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5278907
Over the past decade PG and E has increasingly emphasized the use of renewable resources in its generation mix. As part of this effort the company has become a forerunner in wind energy development. A complete year of meteorological data has confirmed that winds of commercial quality exist over hundreds of acres of hilly grazing land near the Bay area. This led to the siting and construction of PG and E's own 2.5 MW Boeing wind turbine (Model 2560) in Solano County. An extensive two-year monitoring program is planned with particular emphasis on the machine's performance, mechanical reliability, and environmental impacts. The identification of promising sites has resulted in privately financed development of wind farms where the power will be sold to PG and E. To date, negotiations with potential developers have resulted in PG and E plans to purchase power from up to 382.5 MW of wind projects. Other projects under discussion could more than double the amount of wind power under contract in the near future.
