Radiochemical study of ionic-molecular reactions of free phenylvinyl cations with certain oxygen-containing compounds

The ionic molecular reactions of free phenylvinyl cations with water, ethanol, and diethyl ether in various aggregated states were studied by a radiochemical method. The free cations were produced by a nuclear chemical method (as a result of the ..beta.. decay of tritium atoms in styrene C/sub 6/H/sub 5/CT = CHT). It was shown that the main products are products of electrophilic addition: acetophenone, phenylethanal, and isomeric ethoxystyrenes. The competing process - deprotonation of the cations - leads to the formation of phenylacetylene. A quantum chemical interpretation of the results obtained is given within the framework of the theory of perturbation of molecular orbitals.
