An attempt was made to arrange the species and genera of lichens in order of their tolerance to smoke and the general atmospheric pollution of the manufacturing city of Belfast. The lichen vegetation within the actual city boundary was observed at numerous points in different areas of the city. For a distance of approximately 3 miles from Castle Junction, the atmospheric pollution is so great that only a trace of crustaceous lichen cover is present. The main species when recognizable is Lecanora pityrea. From 3 miles to approximately 6.5 miles, there is a sharp and steady increase in the percentage cover of crustaceous lichens. From 6.5 to 9.7 miles, the crustaceous percentage cover is more or less uniform, and there is an increase in species diversity. The first foliose lichens to appear with lessening pollution are species of Parmelia. 5 references, 1 figure, 1 table.
